Data Privacy Organisations

As a society, we are facing one of the most pressing challenges of the last century. That being ownership, control and management of citizen’s data. Along with Trust 3.0 there are a number of organisations helping to address the problem and develop equitable solutions for a safer society. 

Below is a list of organisations pushing for change: 

EFF

• The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is the leading organization defending civil liberties in the digital world. For decades EFF has worked tirelessly in the courts and with activists to protect the freedom to hack, tinker, remix, and create for the long-term good of society. EFF defends free speech on the Internet, fights illegal surveillance, supports freedom-enhancing technologies, and much more.

IAPP

• The IAPP is the largest privacy association in the world and a leader in the privacy industry, facilitating conversations, debates and collaboration among key industry leaders and organizations. Identity Theft Resource Center

• The Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) is a non-profit organization established in 1999 to minimize risk and mitigate the impact of identity compromise.

The World Privacy Forum

• The World Privacy Forum is a nonprofit, non-partisan 501(C)(3) public interest research group. The organization is focused on conducting in-depth research, analysis, and consumer education in the area of data privacy, and focuses on pressing and emerging issues.

Privacy International

• The IAPP is the largest privacy association in the world and a leader in the privacy industry, facilitating conversations, debates and collaboration among key industry leaders and organizations. • EPIC is an independent non-profit research center in Washington, DC. EPIC works to protect privacy, freedom of expression, democratic values, and to promote the Public Voice in decisions concerning the future of the Internet.

• We are a nonprofit organization focused on increasing access to information, policy discussions and meaningful rights so that data privacy can be a reality for everyone.

Digital Privacy Alliance

• The Digital Privacy Alliance is a coalition of technologists, computer engineers, developers, startups, activists, lawyers, and civic hackers who fight for commonsense privacy legislation in statehouses across the country.

European Digital Rights

• European Digital Rights was founded in June 2002. Currently 45 privacy and civil rights organisations in 19 countries have EDRi membership. Members of European Digital Rights have joined forces to defend civil rights in the information society.

Foundation for Technology and Privacy Outreach

• The Foundation for Technology and Privacy Outreach engages in educational initiatives aimed at increasing the public’s awareness of advances in technology, online privacy, and identity issues to ensure that fostering innovation and the promotion of consumer privacy becomes – and remains – a top priority for current and future generations.

Internet Free Expression Alliance

• Internet users, online publishers, library and academic groups and free speech and journalistic organizations share a common interest in opposing the adoption of techniques and standards that could limit the vibrance and openness of the Internet as a communications medium. Indeed, content "filtering" techniques already have been implemented in ways inconsistent with free speech principles, impeding the ability of Internet users to publish and receive constitutionally protected expression.

• The Triangle Privacy Research Hub (TPRH) is a non-profit organization that brings together academics, industry leaders, students, and policy advocates in the North Carolina Research Triangle to address some of society’s most pressing issues through the innovative and ethical use of data.

Demand Progress

• Demand Progress works to win progressive policy changes for ordinary people through organizing, and grassroots advocacy.  In particular, we tend to focus on issues of civil liberties, civil rights, and government reform.

NOYB

• noyb is a non-profit organization aiming to close the gap between privacy laws and the reality of corporate practice. Europe already has stringent privacy and consumer protection laws but lacks effective enforcement of your digital rights. Our goal is to make privacy a reality for everyone.

• The Algorithmic Justice League is an organization that combines art and research to illuminate the social implications and harms of artificial intelligence.
